It's as Easy as Riding a Bike
One of America’s favorite, fun pastimes is enjoying a nice bike ride on a sunny day. According to the League of American Bicyclists, May is National Bike Month, so it’s time to get outside and hop on your new bike. Compared to running and jogging, biking has many benefits as a form of low impact exercise.
First, biking is much easier on the joints, causing less downward force and saving your knees. The smooth, pumping motion of pedaling a bike is superior to running, especially on hard pavement, in the prevention of knee and ankle injuries. Also, it is an excellent tool for recovering from injuries to the lower back, hips, or knees.
Secondly, a relaxing bike ride, on average, burns more calories than a typical walk. In fact, in 2004 Harvard University studied over 150 activities and determined that cycling at 20 miles per hour or faster burned the most calories per mile of any activity!
Finally, biking is fun! There’s always a time and a place for you to fit biking into your schedule, such as a replacement for driving to the gym or a more rewarding morning commute to work. Central Pennsylvania, and particularly State College, offers a wide variety of fun biking trails and routes, ranging from easy rides like the Bellefonte Central Rail Trail and the Park Hills Bike Path Loop to challenging mountain bike trails such as the Tussey Mountain Loop or the Shingletown Gap Loop.
Better yet, go social and check out MapMyRide, part of the MapMyFitness suite that allows you track, share and explore different bike routes in the area right from your phone, tablet, or computer! When it comes to fun spring exercise, it really is as easy as riding a bike!
